Our Hearts Intertwined

After heaven fell, in a valley of the neverending storm, two demonic rulers reigned side-by-side. Their every wish was attended to by a select group of human servants, bound by the deals they made and the loss of their souls. Many of these humans had lost all hope that their lives would ever improve for the better. Until the sudden death of the royal couple.

Immediately, the rightful ownership of the Fragment of Spirit, and with it, the entire kingdom, came into question. The couple’s only child had been banished decades prior, and they had no living relatives to speak of. But that did not stop factions from across the valley to take up arms against each other. Overnight, the kingdom fell into the chaos of war as destructive as the eternal storm.

One human woman saw a chance to escape. She was able to take the Heart Fragment for herself and used its power to free her fellow humans and retrieve their souls. When they finally emerged from the valley, the bearer of the Fragment was chosen to lead the group. Rather than keep the power of the spirit to herself, she decided to share the Fragment amongst them. The group traveled together, forming a clan of mediums that provided their services in human settlements across Vitalune. Out of fear of being targeted by jealous demon clans, the family kept their use of the Fragment secret, and its whereabouts became lost.

Centuries later, a direct descendant of the founder of the group married a famed demon hunter. It wasn’t long before the two had their first child. But shortly after his birth, the boy became sick. His father summoned the finest healers in the land, but not one could heal his child. As his condition deteriorated, his mother grew desperate. In the cover of darkness, she stole the Heart Fragment from her family. As the boy drew his final breaths, she presented the Fragment to him, calling upon its power to save her son.

In a bright glow, the Fragment of Spirit merged with the spirit of the boy. As the powers of life and death, of hope and despair, coursed through him, two hearts began to beat as one. When the light faded, the Fragment was gone, but the child’s strength had returned. The family of mediums was furious when the source of their power was lost. In their fury, they abandoned both the mother and her child. She made no effort to pursue them. Instead, she settled into her new life alongside her husband and their son.
