These deepfake videos are indistinguishable from a real video, so it is far easier for people to believe whatever speech is being circulated on social media that day.

It has become just as common for a public official to claim that a video was a deepfake when, in reality, it wasn’t. Whether or not it actually was is left in the hands of social media. Those that want to support the official will agree with them, while those that don’t will vocally disagree. Posts rarely breach their partisan ecosystem, so there exists two truths: one spun by Republicans and one told by Democrats. And once you choose your side, it becomes impossible to hear from the other.

This left the 2028 election in an incredibly messy place. Debates were disorganized, facts cherry-picked, and perspectives warped by organizations trying to promote their side while tearing down the other. How do you decide what is true, in this environment? While many have claimed that they’d be able to spot fake news, that confidence has begun to waver, and the number of people who have shared false stories have been rising. News has become less factual and more opinionated in this politically polarized country.

December 1st, 2028 After the final votes have been tallied, there have been cries that deepfakes have been used to spread misinformation by both Republicans and Democrats.
