Narrating “The Tale of Vitalune”

Hey, everyone!

Now, you might’ve noticed something a little different. A little unusual. And that’s that you’re about to hear my voice instead of read my voice.

Well, that’s ‘cause, recently, I’ve been showing off past art I’ve made, so now, I wanna take a look at past writings. But this particular little drabble is in the style of an old folktale, passed down for generations. Now, I could just spit this story out at you as a regular old blog post (or as a separate page, wink wink nudge nudge) but since Ander- remember him?- often recites these stories to his familiar, I figured it’d be better to read it out the way he would.

So, without further ado… ahem!

Transcript:

Um… h-hello! My name is Ander. Ander Alloway. There um… th-there isn’t really anything else you need to know about me, other than that… well- I um- I like stories. A lot. M-my parents used to tell me all sorts of old legends and folktales, and they always stuck with me. It’s… a little silly, b-but um… I sometimes… like to tell these stories to my familiar. I can never really get anyone else to stay and listen, so… um… i-if it’s okay… I’d like to tell one of these stories. I g-guess I should start with the most well-known one…

For millennia, a tale was passed down from parents to their children. It told the tale of life and death: the tale of Vitalune.

“Long ago, the world of Vitalune was inhabited by three races- humans, demons, and angels. Leading them all was the Archangel, a powerful being wielding the source of all magic- the Heart of Vitalune. It was using the Heart that she granted humanity magic and founded the blessed city of Heaven’s Peak. Under her eternal Strength, unconditional Love, brilliant Intellect, unfaltering Will, and shining Hope, humanity and angels alike lived in harmony, protected from the rage of the demon tribes.

As sudden as a thunderclap, a war broke out within Heaven’s Peak. A group of angels, their names forgotten by time,  rebelled against the Archangel, fearing that she would abuse her power. In the chaos of the rebellion, the Archangel disappeared, leaving nothing but the Heart. Not wanting another being to become as powerful as she once was, the Heart was locked away in the center of Heaven’s Peak.

With the Archangel gone, and the Heart locked away, the demon tribes took the opportunity to strike. Uniting as one, they invaded Heaven’s Peak, leaving carnage behind in their wake. The angels attempted to fight back, but to no avail. In a desperate effort to end the war, the angels unlocked the Heart and attempted to use it once more, but it rejected every angel that tried to wield it. Without the Archangel or the power of the Heart, the angels of Heaven’s Peak were slaughtered.

After the streets of Heaven’s Peak had been soaked with the blood of angels, the demons seized the Heart. But as soon as they came across its power, they once again found themselves at odds with each other over which group would keep it. As a compromise, the largest factions broke the Heart into five pieces, giving each fragment to the leader of the major tribes.

Almost all of the angels perished in the war, the few survivors being those who had already abandoned the ways of the Lunar Goddess and fell from Heaven’s Peak. But humanity managed to survive just a bit better. Using the gifts granted by the Archangel, they were able to protect themselves from the dark horde of demons, forming safe civilizations of their own.

For centuries since then, constant wars and skirmishes have been fought between the demonic tribes for more power and influence. But among all their skirmishes, one thing is agreed upon: if a being- be it angel, demon or human-  were to reunite the Fragments, they will be able to wield its power and become Vitalune’s new ruler.”

…

…aha! S-sorry! I um- I th-think I got a little carried away at the end there. It’s… nice, being able to tell stories like this. M-my boss always thought these stories were a waste of time, but… they make me feel closer to my family.

So um… th-thank you for listening. Goodbye for now.

…So! What did you think?

Are these sorts of readings something you’d want to hear more often? Let me know!
