His Story
Adoption
Dexter was adopted while I was in middle school. He wasn't even a year old when his previous owner,
one of Dad's coworkers, gave him up, claiming she was allergic to him. Dad and my little brother Reid
went together to pick him up, and the poor baby cried all the way home.
Mom and I were at a school play when all this happened. When I got home, Reid ran up to me, saying, "We got a kitty!" Similarly,
my twin brother, Ethan, was away on a camping trip. I refused to name the new cat until he got back, and when he returned (and nearly had
a heart attack upon seeing the little guy), we decided to name him Dexter. Yes, after that show with the serial killer.
Anxiety
On the first day Dexter was here, he hid behind the TV, scared out of his mind. Eventually, he began to
venture out and would let us pet him, but he still refused to leave the basement for a long time.
The few times he would leave, we had to be completely silent-- any noise at all would send him running right back down.
Thankfully, with time, he got more comfortable around us. Now, if you're the only one in the house, he won't leave you alone! Dexter
now hates being alone and will often follow us around the house. He still gets nervous around new people, but once he warms up to you,
he's a sweetheart!
