Over the past year, new laws have been put into place to combat disinformation. Many have criticized these laws, calling them censorship laws in disguise.
And yet, despite the efforts of the law, social media companies continue to pursue their own agenda. Algorithms promoting content that validates a user’s beliefs have become rampant. Many users have stated that content promoting the new leadership is becoming more prevalent on their feeds while those that are critical are very rarely promoted.
When questioned, government officials explained that the posts being stifled or removed pose a national security threat, despite no revealing or classified information being included. There have also been reports of certain organizations being blocked on government machines, preventing officials from even accessing these posts.
As more legislation is passed, these measures will likely grow more strict. News outlets are left in an uncomfortable position of walking the line between these laws and upholding the values of journalism.
